The same car was still behind them.

Henrietta had looked out the side mirror no less than fifteen times in the last two minutes, and the same car kept pace with them at a discrete distance. Whether it was hypervigilance or paranoia, Henrietta couldn’t let something like that go. Sure, they could be a Benson resident coming to Heart’s Grove, in fact that was the likely scenario, but there was the possibility that they were following Henrietta and Ralph.

She wracked her mind to see if she could remember a car like the one following them anywhere in the vicinity of the bank when they’d parked. She couldn’t remember, but they were certainly doing a good job of following them now.

“Ralph—”

“We’ve got a tail. I know.”

She turned to him and saw the determined set of his jaw, his hands secure but not overly tight on the wheel.

“Saw them pull out when we left the bank.”

So that settled it. Henrietta wasn’t paranoid—at least not this time. Someone had followed them from the bank, but why? What were they hoping to find?

“Do you think you can lose them?”

Ralph flashed a smile at her. “Is that a real question?”

She laughed. “I can’t forget that you were one of Heart’s Grove’s finest.”

He blew out a breath and made the next turn, taking a back-way Henrietta knew of. “I was, but the goal here is to see if we can have them get close enough so we can identify a plate.”

“Smart thinking, Detective.”

Another flash of a grin before his features set back in grim determination. She could tell from the side mirror that the car had followed them, but it was still too far for a good view of the license plate.

“Hold on there, Henri,” Ralph said, maneuvering a turn that she thought would give them away.

Perhaps that was what Ralph had expected, since the car seemed to catch on. The driver sped up, coming around the corner only moments behind them, tires screeching. She wasn’t sure if it was the same type of scenario as the other day. Would they try to run them off the road too? But that made no sense.

Throwing away any sense of pretense that they didn’t know they were being followed, Henrietta turned in her seat and, just as the car sped close, took down their license plate. Unfortunately, the driver’s face was obstructed by the visor hanging low and a turtleneck sweater pulled up high over the lower half of their face.

Still, she pulled out her cellphone and attempted to take a photo of the driver in the car. As if sensing her plan to uncover their identity, the driver suddenly slammed on their brakes and took the next turn. They peeled off from pursuit, and Ralph slowed down.

He’d already speed-dialed the police station and was talking with dispatch to get a car off to find whoever it was that had tailed them.

“Do you think they’ll find them?” she asked.

“Doubtful but go ahead and read off that plate for the officer.
